Abstract Around 47% of Canadians are at risk of developing cancer, with heart disease being the leading cause of death in the country. Hydrogel-based drug delivery systems offer numerous benefits, including effective treatment for diseases like Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, Cancer, AIDS, and Tuberculosis. However, they face toxicity due to hydrolytic degradation of synthetic polymers and the negatively charged and/or hydrophobic nature of some polymers. This project aims to test the advantages of Pectin as a substitute hydrogel to synthetic polymers and natural polymers like Chitosan, as it has enzymatically degrading, hydrophilic, and negatively charged characteristics.
