Getting Started

Where do I start?

Wondering were to begin? Have an idea and are not sure where to go with it? The Science Success! student guide and workbook have been designed by BASEF organizers to help you learn about the scientific process while producing a well-designed project. Have a look at our Project Resources page for links to sites which will get you thinking, get you started, give you information about research methods, and provide hints and tips on project presentation.

Registration & scientific review forms

On-line registration will start in early February. The registration page has exact dates, an overview and step-by-step instructions with links to the electronic and paper forms.

While registration comes late in the process, safety and ethics procedures must be considered early on. Your project might require that you fill out ethics and safety forms and many of these must be filled out before you start your experiment. See the BASEF 2010 Forms Required page for more information on these scientific-review forms (there have been substantial changes for BASEF 2010, so read this section, and the Rules section, carefully!).

What does a project display look like?

You can be creative, so long as you don't break any of the safety rules. But most project displays have a three-panel backboard, a binder full of notes and and plans and results and maybe some props. See the BASEF 2009 Winners' Gallery for photos of some project displays.

Teachers please note ...

Each school is allowed to register twelve (12) projects per level

  • Elementary Schools with grades K- 8:
    Level 7/8 = 12 projects
  • Secondary Schools with grades 9-12:
    Level 9/10 = 12 projects
    Level 11/12 = 12 projects
  • Independent Schools with grades K-12:
    Level 7/8 = 12 projects
    Level 9/10 = 12 projects
    Level 11/12 = 12 projects

How you select the projects is up to you and your school or board.
