BASEF Students Win Awards at International Fair

Westmount and White Oaks Secondary School Students Are International Science Fair Winners

Students representing the Bay Area as part of Team Canada brought home top awards from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (IISEF), held May 8 to 13 in Phoenix, Arizona. 

Over 1750 students from 77 countries, regions and territories competed at IISEF. Four area students attended this prestigious fair, with their trips funded by the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF).   BASEF is a regional science fair for grades 7 to 12 students from Hamilton, Halton Region, Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant Counties, and Six Nations.

BASEF students won the following awards at the international fair:

Samna Aziz, Grade 12, Westmount Secondary School, Hamilton

Project - Surface Modification of Polycaprolactone and Hydroxyapatite Endosseous Implant Fixture Coatings

  •   IISEF Grand Award  - Third Place, Materials Science category ($1000 cash award)

 Emma Mogus, Grade 12, White Oaks Secondary School, Oakville

Project - TiC- Tongue Interface Communication: Assistive Technology for Severe Impairments

  •    IISEF Grand Award - Third Place, Biomedical Engineering category ($1000 cash award)
  •    IISEF Special Award – Synapatics, Inc. Award, Second Place  ($1500 cash award)


Sixteen additional top BASEF students are competing at the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) in Montreal, Quebec.
