Area students won top awards at the Canada-Wide and Intel International science fairs this week.Twenty students representing Hamilton, Halton Region, Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant Counties, and Six Nations competed at these prestigious fairs, with their trips funded by awards won at the 53nd annual Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) in March.
It was the best year ever for BASEF at the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF). Our sixteen competitors brought home 11 awards: one gold medal, three silver medals, six bronze medals and one Challenge Award. CWSF was held May 11 to May 18 in Lethbridge, Alberta.
At the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (IISEF) one of the four students representing our area as part of "Team Canada" brought home two awards. IISEF was held May 12 to 17 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Cash, prizes and scholarships worth more than $150,000 were awarded to student participants at BASEF 2103 on March 23rd at Hillfield-Strathallan College.
Especial congratulations to Junyi (Sarah) Wu of Assumption College School, winner of the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Best-in-Fair award.
Congratulations as well to the twenty students who won all-expense-paid trips to compete at either the Canada Wide Science Fair in Lethbridge, Alberta or the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona.
The BASEF Committee award for top elementary school was awarded to Hillfield-Strathallan College in Hamilton. The Herb Gildea award for top high school was won by King's Christian Collegiate in Oakville.
Public Viewing is Saturday, March 23rd, from 9:00am to Noon, at Hillfield Strathallan College.
Awards Ceremony 1:30pm to 3:30pm at the Mohawk College Theatre.
